Melvin Burton

–

Lincoln, Delaware

Melvin Lee Burton, 83, of Lincoln departed this life on February 1, 2025, at Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus in Milford, DE. Born on February 23, 1941, in Milford, DE, he was the son of the late John and Grace Lofland Burton.

Melvin was a believer of Jesus Christ, and through the years he would fellowship at Siloam A.M.E. church in Slaughter Neck, DE. His early education was obtained in Slaughter Neck, at a small three-room school. He later attended William C. Jason High School in Georgetown, DE.

Melvin was inducted into the United States Army on November 5, 1964, and was stationed in various locations such as Fort Hamilton, New York; Fort Jackson, South Carolina; and in Germany. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal-Marksman (Rifle) before his honorable discharge (early release) on October 13, 1966.

Throughout his life, he worked at various jobs ranging from lawn and landscaping to many, many years of service at Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) in Ellendale, where he maintained roadways within Sussex County and retired from working there in the fall of 2007. Additionally, because of his special love of working outdoors, he maintained his home's lawn and grew an annual vegetable garden.

Although Melvin was a quiet soul, he was ecstatic when his brothers came around, enjoying playing horseshoes, checkers and voicing his understanding of Bible scriptures. He had a genuine love for family that showed in his actions. During his life here, he was a devoted husband and a loving  father to his children and grandchildren.

Melvin's memory will be cherished, and he will truly bemissed.

Melvin was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Margie L. Burton; mother, Grace Gene Lofland Burton; father, John Burton; brothers, Charles Burton, Lester Burton, David Burton, Jackie Burton, Alvin Burton, and Russel Burton.

Melvin is survived by his children, Melvin L. Burton, Jr., of Lincoln, DE; Tammy M.
