Virginia Morman

–

Dover, Delaware

Reverend Virginia Jean Morman, affectionately known as Jean, was born on August 13th, 1949, in Fort Gaines, Georgia, to the late Johnny and Susie Mae Cooper. She peacefully transitioned on January 29, 2026

Jean relocated with her parents and siblings to Newark, New Jersey, where she later graduated from Westside High School in East Orange. Following high school, she proudly served in the United States Army for four and a half years.

In answer to Reverend James “Jim” Morman, Sr.’s prayer for a “special gift,” God brought Jean into his life at a friend’s office. The two were united in Holy Matrimony on June 5, 1970. From this blessed union, two sons were born.

While residing in Penns Grove, Reverend Jean was a faithful member of Hopewell Baptist Church for over twenty years. There she served diligently as a Sunday School teacher, choir director, and seamstress for the choir whenever needed.

In 1991, Reverend Jean and Reverend James “Jim” Morman, Sr relocated to Dover, Delaware, due to Reverend Jim’s employment at Delaware State College. As she prepared for this new chapter, Jean often sang the song “Brand New Life,” embracing the journey ahead with faith and joy.

Shortly after moving to Delaware, Reverend Jean became an active member of Calvary Baptist Church. Her ministry touched many areas of the church and community, including youth and young adult ministry, the church choirs, Calvary’s Soup Kitchen, and prison outreach at Stevenson House Youth Detention Center.

Together, Reverend Jean and Reverend Jim founded The Tree Ministry, where men and women would gather under a tree to hear the word of God. Through this ministry, many souls were saved, and several later became members of Calvary Baptist Church. The couple also served faithfully on the Marriage Enrichment committee, helping couples grow spiritually and relationally through retreats such as the Love Conference Ministry Weekend in Ocean City, Maryland.

Reverend Jean leaves behind a legacy of love and faith to cherish her memory: her devoted husband, Reverend James “Jim” Morman, Sr.; two beloved sons, James Morman, Jr. (Tiffany) and Johnathan Morman, Sr. (Dana); four grandchildren, Joshua Morman, Janae Morman, Sofie Thurn and Johnathan “LJ” Morman; four sisters, Reverend Adell Washington (Reverend James Washington), Missionary Louise Owens (late William Owens), Alice Dues (late Reverend Charles Dues), Elder Fannie Woodhouse (late Ricky Woodhouse); and one brother, Johnny Cooper, Jr. (Elizabeth Nath).

She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, and spiritual children across the world. Reverend Jean was truly a mother and “auntie” to many.

Her favorite scripture was Psalm 133:1 (NIV): “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.”
