Virginia Smith

Wilmington Manor, Delaware

Virginia Smith, affectionately known as Meema or Gma Major MOM to her loved ones, passed away on January 13, 2024. Virginia was born on May 29, 1946, in Bowling Green, OH, USA. Throughout her life, she lived in various places, including Kingston, GA; Fort Pierce, FL; West Palm Beach, FL; Bowling Green, OH; and finally, Wilmington Manor, Delaware. Virginia was a true matriarch and her family and friends mattered most to her. She was a spirited, charismatic, and loving individual who was truly one of a kind.

Virginia was a witty woman who had a knack for bookkeeping. She spent her working years in the accounting field, retiring from Smith independent building inspector. Virginia's charisma and love for her work were evident in her dedication and commitment to her profession. However, those who knew her best would agree that her true passion lay in watching her shows, immersing herself in a good book, cooking her signature dishes, and creating intricate designs through crocheting and needlepoint. She was a woman of many talents, and her spirited personality shone through in everything she did.

Virginia, also known as Virginia Marie Russell, was widowed, having been married to her beloved husband, William Smith. She is survived by her children Penny Griffith, Robert Sanders, Heather Long, and Russell Senecal. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pauline Sweet and Virgil Russell, her former husband, Wilfred Senecal, her brother, Oscar Sweet, her sister, Marjorie Sweet, her daughter, Carrie Senecal, and former husband, Charles Sanders.

The words of Maya Angelou resonate when remembering Virginia: "My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style." Virginia embodied this quote, living her life with passion, spreading love and wit wherever she went, and leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her.

We invite you to share your fondest memories of Virginia and upload photos that celebrate her life on the memorial page. Let's remember and honor Virginia for the exceptional woman she was - filled with love, spirit, charisma, and wit.
